South Sudan, Africa’s youngest nation, has faced significant challenges since gaining independence in 2011. Civil conflicts in 2013 and 2016, compounded by economic stagnation and instability, have hindered its development progress. Despite efforts like the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), signed in 2018, and subsequent reforms, including the formation of a Transitional Government of National Unity in 2020, the country’s recovery has been hampered by floods, the COVID-19 pandemic, and oil production constraints.
Vulnerability to climate change and natural disasters exacerbates South Sudan’s humanitarian crisis, with droughts and floods wreaking havoc on livelihoods. Currently, 9.4 million people, mainly women and children, require humanitarian assistance, further strained by the influx of refugees from neighbouring Sudan.
The plight of women and children is dire, with widespread poverty, limited access to education and healthcare, and rampant gender-based violence persisting amid conflict and insecurity. Upholding human rights and addressing the root causes of these challenges are imperative for South Sudan’s path to recovery and development.
